Barbara Fredrickson on the Benefits of Love-Based Meditations

Notes from the video

A note on the notes: We have translated Barbara Fredrickson’s words into the language we use in our Mindfulness Fundamentals 3.0 course. What she calls “positive emotions,” we consider to be states of being that are fundamental aspects of our boundlessly loving, true self. Enjoy!

• When we increasingly experience positive states of being -- like the four kinds of love (kindness, compassion, joy, and peace) -- they transform us for the better.

• Love-based meditations (which includes appreciative joy, sympathetic joy, kindness, compassion, or peace meditations) helps us unleash our love, so we experience it more and more in our daily life.

• Novice meditators who meditate for 8 weeks increased access to their inner love. This helped them increase their mindfulness, improve their close and trusting relationships, increase their vagal tone, be more resilient when faced with difficulty, and reduce their symptoms of ill health.

• We can all languish or flourish. The more we experience our inner states of love, the more likely we will flourish.

• Let love light our way towards flourishing.
